Hanauma Bay – Nature Preserve Provides Exciting Underwater Experience

About
The large, protected bay at Hanauma on the southeast shore of Oahu is one of Hawaii’s most scenic locations. It is also one of the safest snorkeling areas, with lifeguard on duty and the nearshore waters relatively well-protected from the open ocean.

The rocky ledges and curving shoreline at Hanauma shelter a coral reef that is rich with marine life, making it an ideal snorkeling and diving location. A former winner of “America’s Best Beach,” Hanauma is a must-see spot on any Oahu vacation.

Hanauma means “Curved Bay,” and the seafloor here is actually the crater of an extinct 35,000-year-old volcano which filled with seawater when the outer wall of the crater collapsed.

Marine Life Conservation Area
Now protected as a Marine Life Conservation Area, Hanauma Bay provides habitat for a multitude of Hawaiian marine species that make snorkeling a constant surprise. Commonly seen fish include surgeonfish, tangs, butterfly fish, and Moorish idols.

Things To Do
Once you have enjoyed the colorful underwater world relax on the sandy beach which is great for sunbathing and enjoying the sights or having a picnic. If you are feeling energetic then follow one of the hiking trails along the coast to some great lookout areas that provide panoramic views of the shoreline.

Keep an eye out for humpback whales breaching offshore during the winter months. On clear days you can see the islands of Molokai and Lanai.

See Kauai’s Na Pali Coast
One of Earth’s natural wonders, the 15-mile-long rugged coastline is a land of steep seacliffs, remote white-sand beaches, and monumental mountains lined with waterfalls. Gaze into deep, ancient valleys once inhabited by Hawaiians, and see the famous valley of Kalalau. The steep, furrowed mountains of this region are a sight to behold. You can see the Na Pali by boat or helicopter, or by an arduous trek 11-miles into Kalalau.

Visit Waikiki Beach
In ancient times Hawaiian royalty lived here and valued the area’s “healing waters.” Today people from all around the world find rejuvenation in the turquoise waters of Waikiki on Oahu’s southern shore. Lined with high-rise hotels, restaurants featuring live music, and an array of shopping opportunities, the main draw of Waikiki are the people themselves. Rent a surfboard or just swim in the water, lay on the beach and take in the scenery.

Hanauma Bay
Located not far from Waikiki and is one of Oahu’s most popular snorkeling and scuba diving spots.
