Beautiful Sounds of the Islands – Slack Key Guitar

When I was recently staying on Kauai in my Kauai Vacation Rental I went out to see a musical show and was astounded at the wonderful style of music I saw that night. The music is known as Slack Key Guitar, and it is known in Hawaiian as ki hoalu (ki means “key” or “pitch,” and hoalu means “to slacken, loosen”).

After the show I decided to learn more about this beautiful style of music and here is what I found out. The slack key guitar style was first developed with the influence of vaqueros (Spanish cowboys) who came to Hawaii Island from Mexican California in 1830 at the request of King Kamehameha III (Kauikeaouli). The reason they came was to instruct Hawaiians in techniques of managing the growing herds of wild cattle that had been multiplying rapidly ever since the time of King Kamehameha I. He was given the first cattle in the Islands by English Captain George Vancouver in 1793.

Wonderful Recipes and Amazing Food – Hawaii Regional Cuisine

During my last stay on Oahu I stayed at an Oahu Hotel and ate out at some extremely wonderful restaurants that were serving such delicious food that I wanted to learn more about it. Well, it turns out that the food that was being served was known as Hawaii Regional Cuisine, and this type of cuisine combines all of the best qualities of the Hawaiian Islands.

Hawaii Regional Cuisine began on Maui in August of 1991 had its origins when twelve master Island chefs formed an association to develop a world-class cuisine that has now won major international culinary awards.

The Sport of Surfing in the Hawaiian Islands

When I first planned my trip to the Hawaiian Islands by getting the very best Oahu Vacation Information I made arrangements for a wonderful trip, though at the time I really wasn’t so much interested in surfing. Then when I began to travel around Oahu I began to see surfers everywhere! I saw surfboards on top of cars, in trucks, and people are carrying them as they walk toward the beach.

This made me think about how surfing got started in the first place and I really began to wonder about the history of surfing in the Hawaiian Islands. Of course it does seem inevitable that the seafaring Polynesians who were so skilled in all aspects of living near and sailing over the ocean would be among the first people to surf the ocean waves. Today the Hawaiian Islands are a mecca for surfers who come from all over the world to test themselves on Hawaii’s large and challenging waves.

The Waikiki Beachboys and the Aloha Spirit

As I gaze over Waikiki from my Oahu Vacation Rental and see the surf instructors below I think back to the early days of Waikiki when the tradition of the Waikiki Beachboys began.

From the 1920s to the 1950s, a group of water sports instructors working on the beaches fronting the Moana and Royal Hawaiian Hotels came to be known as the Waikiki Beachboys. One of the most famous of the Beachboys was the legendary Hawaiian waterman and Olympic champion Duke Kahanamoku. In 1911, Duke and other local watermen founded Hui Nalu (Club of the Waves), and many of the club’s members eventually became Waikiki Beachboys.
