About
The large, protected bay at Hanauma on the southeast shore of Oahu is one of Hawaii’s most scenic locations. It is also one of the safest snorkeling areas, with lifeguard on duty and the nearshore waters relatively well-protected from the open ocean.

The rocky ledges and curving shoreline at Hanauma shelter a coral reef that is rich with marine life, making it an ideal snorkeling and diving location. A former winner of “America’s Best Beach,” Hanauma is a must-see spot on any Oahu vacation.

Hanauma means “Curved Bay,” and the seafloor here is actually the crater of an extinct 35,000-year-old volcano which filled with seawater when the outer wall of the crater collapsed.

Stay nearby, check out our Hawaii Kai vacation rentals.

Marine Life Conservation Area
Now protected as a Marine Life Conservation Area, Hanauma Bay provides habitat for a multitude of Hawaiian marine species that make snorkeling a constant surprise. Commonly seen fish include surgeonfish, tangs, butterfly fish, and Moorish idols.

Things To Do
Once you have enjoyed the colorful underwater world relax on the sandy beach which is great for sunbathing and enjoying the sights or having a picnic. If you are feeling energetic then follow one of the hiking trails along the coast to some great lookout areas that provide panoramic views of the shoreline.

Keep an eye out for humpback whales breaching offshore during the winter months. On clear days you can see the islands of Molokai and Lanai.

While the bay’s curved shape does and offshore reef do provide some protection from the open ocean, snorkelers still must use caution, and should always check with lifeguards and pay attention to any warnings that are posted on the beach.

Hanauma Bay also has an award-winning Marine Education Center that helps to educate people about Hawaii’s fragile coral reefs. Nearby is a also a food concession, snorkel gear rentals, lockers, showers and changing rooms. Call (808) 396-4229 for more information.
