Categorized as Oahu Vacation Information

When you are seeking a family friendly beach, some amenities to consider include the basics—restrooms, showers, picnic tables, parking, lifeguards, shallow swimming areas, shady areas, etc. Depending on the family activity and ages, you may also want to consider what the beach offers for water sports and other activities. Kailua on the Windward Coast in Oahu offers a few great options for family friendly beaches.

Planning a trip to the Windward Coast of Oahu? Check out our Kailua vacation rentals.

Kailua Beach Park
Located on the East side of Oahu. Kailua beach is ideal as a setting, with plenty of spots to plop your stuff down for a fun beach day. The beach is complete with lifeguards, lessons and sports gear to rent, picnic tables and pavilions, showers, etc. While lazing on the sand, you can point out the islands in the distance. Kailua Beach is known for its wind surfing. Even just a day in the sun, a few leisurely strolls and a picnic full of fun snacks will keep the kids happy. Considering their ages, in addition to swimming and wind surfing, it’s also a good place for kayaking and body boarding. Safety concerns are minimal but do watch for Portuguese Man-of-War and stinging limu (seaweed) in the summer.

Kalama Beach
Located on Kailua Bay and a quieter area for a family beach day. While there are no lifeguards, the beach provides restrooms, showers, plenty of shade and picnic areas. Kalama Beach is a grassy beach, an option for picnicking without the sand and also bringing the dogs. Beginning body boarding and surfing enthusiasts will find it a good place to practice. Families can wrap up at sunset—the parking lot closes at 6pm.

Lanikai Beach
Lanikai beach evokes a lovely tropical atmosphere and the twin islands, Mokuluas, are visible in the background. The beach itself is family friendly for swimming and snorkeling; however, it’s likely better for a quick trip because there are no restroom or shower facilities.

Makapuu Beach
Also on the Windward Coast and worth a mention is Makapuu Beach, with Makapuu Point Lighthouse. It’s a good scenic spot, better with older children. A walking trail provides a reward at the end, a whale watch spot.
