Traveling to Hawaii with a cat or dog is simple if you look into the rules beforehand. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture and your airline will be able to provide information about the guidelines. Hawaii is a rabies free state and airlines will require proper documentation (health certificates, updated vaccination, etc.) and it’s critical that you make sure you’re aware of all the rules so that no detail is left to chance, making you leave the pet at home.

While it does require a bit of research, it’s worth traveling to Hawaii with your pet, which for most people is a part of the family. If you’re staying for an extended period of time, it’s well worth it to bring you pet. But keep in mind that fees are involved and that quarantine period is anywhere from 1 to 120 days, depending on your preparations and foresight.

Additional research includes finding out whether your hotel, bed & breakfast inn or vacation rental home allows pets and if so, what are the costs and considerations. Pet-friendly places are increasing but it will save a lot of time, money and possible embarrassment if you check into where you can travel with your pet.

Wherever you travel within Hawaii, including the beach, show courtesy and ask before bringing your pet with you. Many beaches in Hawaii allow dogs on the beach but not all do and still others allow dogs in areas below the seawall, below the high tide line or below the retaining wall. Also research the latest information to determine whether a leash is required. Check with municipal, local and state government websites and make certain before you go.
