World Championship Paddleboarding Race Crosses Channel
On July 26 is the 13th Annual MOLOKAI TO OAHU PADDLEBOARD RACE takes place. This epic 32-mile race across the Kaiwi Channel from Molokai to Oahu features competitors from around the world, and is considered the world championship of long-distance paddleboarding and stand-up paddleboarding. Honolulu Triathlon Challenges Novices and Experts
Also on July 26 is the 2009 TINMAN TRIATHLON in Honolulu. The even includes a 800-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike ride, and 10-kilometer run. The swim starts at 5:30 am the Queen’s Beach Pier area in Waikīkī and the transition area is at Kapiolani Park.
Put On Your Dancing Shoes at the Ballroom Gala
The BLACK AND WHITE BALLROOM GALA takes place on Saturday, August 1, in Kailua Kona on the Big Island at the Sheraton Keauhou Convention Center [check link] from 7pm until 11 pm. The Gala features music by Dj Tiger. Dance Floor, Disco Ball, Cocktails and dance exhibitions.
Tahitian Dance Competition Instill Cultural Pride
The weekend of August 1 and 2 is the 8th Annual HEIVA I KAUAI IAORANA TAHITI at Kapaa Beach Park on Kauai. This International Tahitian Dance Competition features group as well as solo perfomances and includes contemporary and traditional Tahitian drumming competitions.
The event will also feature Master Drummer Heimanu Tehahe and Dance Troup from Tahiti. Workshops in Tahitian dance and drumming will be offered along with Polynesian arts & crafts as well as island foods. The event begins at 10 am.
Tastings, Cooking Demos, and Fun at the Mango Festival
The 2009 MANGO FESTIVAL takes place in Keauhou on the Big Island on August 1. This all day event starts at 8 am. at the Keauhou Farmers’ Market at Keauhou Shopping Center. A farmer-chef presentation will begin at 10 am. and will include a cooking demonstration and taste sampling. Live entertainment will perform and various activites are planned.
Beautiful Blossoms and Workshops at Orchid Show
From August 7-9 is the 57th Annual Hilo Orchid Society Show and Sale at Edith Kanaka’ole Stadium[check link] on the Big Island. There will be thousands of orchids on display including many exotic species as well as the latest hybrids. Judging will be conducted by certified American Orchid Society judges.
There will also be free mini-classes providing information about orchids and their cultivation, as well as instruction on flower arranging with orchids, and free give-aways every hour!
Pedal For A Cause On the Paradise Bike Ride
The 2009 PARADISE RIDE KAUAI takes place on August 8 and 9 on the Garden Isle.
This annual fundraising event for Malama Pono, the Kauai AIDS Project began in 1986, and your participation helps Kauai’s only HIV/AIDS service organization continue their important education, community assistance, outreach, and client support with the goal of ending AIDS.
Rock Till You Drop With No Doubt
The popular rock band NO DOUBT[check link] will be performing on August 11 at the Blaisidell Arena in Honolulu at 8 pm. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster[check link].
Exhibits Galore At the World Heritage Festival
On August 15 is the Hawaii’s 5TH ANNUAL WORLD HERITAGE FESTIVAL at the Mooheau Bandstand & Park in Downtown Hilo on the Big Island. The Festival features non-stop entertainment as well as exhibits about the many cultures of immigrants to the Hawaiian Islands. There will be performances, storytelling, demonstrations, fashion exhibits, an international food court, and arts and crafts at the “World Bazaar & Marketplace.”
Positive Vibrations At the Ziggy Marley Concert
On August 15 check out ZIGGY MARLEY at the Waikiki Shell on Oahu. The eldest son of Bob Marley, Ziggy has won a Grammy and has numerous successful albums. The show will also feature various other international artists.
15 K Memorial Run in Honolulu
On August 16 is the NORMAN TAMANAHA MEMORIAL 15K RUN beginning in Honolulu on the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Monsarrat Avenue. Race organizers expect at least 500 runners at this event. For more information call 808-295-6777.
Catch As Catch Can At Popular Island Fishing Tournament
On August 21-23 is the 23RD ANNUAL BIG ISLAND MARLIN TOURNAMENT on the Big Island’s Kona Bay. This is the 4th qualifying Big Island event of the Maui Jim Hawaii Marlin Tournament Series[check link] that features big game fishing for cash prizes.
Honor Duke And See Hawaii’s Best Waterpeople at Oceanfest
From August 23-29 in Waikiki is the 8TH ANNUAL DUKE’S OCEANFEST. The Festival begins with a Ho‘omana Ceremony at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa [check link] and then celebrates Duke Kahanamoku’s[check link encyc] 119th birthday at a sunrise blessing at his statue on the beach in Waikiki on August 24.
Four days of ocean sports competitions includes the Duke’s Legends Surf Classic, Surf Paddleboard Championship, Stand-Up Beach Boy Paddle Surfing Championship, the Duke’s Waikiki Ocean Mile Swim, a Surf Polo Tournament, Waterman Challenge, and other events.
The culmination of the Oceanfest on August 29 includes a sidewalk surfboard parade and a draping of the statue of Duke Kahanamoku with the beautiful flower lei.
Exotic Foods Featured At Greek Festival
On August 29-30 at Ala Moana Park is the 29th Annual GREEK FESTIVAL. Plenteous supplies of Mediterranean Greek foods will be served including delicacies such as Spanokopita (Spinach Pie), Gyro sandwiches, Moussaka, Pasticio, Greek Chicken, Souvlaki (skewered beef and pork), and baklavas. My weakness is the Greek Pastries. Also served will be Greek Beer, Ouzo, red, white and retsina Greek wines.
