Turtle Bay, on Oahu’s North Shore, is in Kahuku, which means projection, likely a nod to the northernmost point on the island. Miles of beaches and a resort community that maintains high standards in its surroundings and offerings.

Start the day with a pleasant beach stroll. Five miles of the resorts beach area make this simple and a lovely remote hike is possible here. After working up a decent appetite, head to Café Haleiwa, a completely casual spot that takes breakfast seriously. It’s great for a lazy breakfast (served till 12:30 p.m.); just be prepared to agonize over morning favorites—pancakes, omelets, granola with berries and yogurt, French toast and home fries, plus coffee drinks. It gets busy in this small spot so you can eat outside on the patio or try another great spot, Hukilau Café in nearby Laie.

Next, head to Kawela Beach for the iridescent tidepools and reefs, for snorkeling. The sea life is one of Turtle Bay’s great attributes. Be careful in the winter as the North Shore’s beaches are known for magnificent waves. Kawela Bay, Kuilima Cove, and Turtle Bay are all within the span of the Turtle Bay community, so you always have an alternative to a beach activity and can opt for a relaxing day in the sun if weather conditions are not ideal for water sports. A must for a one day itinerary in Turtle Bay is lunch from the Famous Kahuku Shrimp Truck, located in a plaza on Kamehameha Highway. Shrimp with garlic, fried, with squid or mahi mahi, Western barbecue style, coconut or with steak is how shrimp is served with a helping of white rice and macaroni. It’s an affordable and worthwhile experience for anyone visiting the islands.

After a day in the sun, stop by your hotel or vacation home to freshen up before heading out again for a leisurely shopping experience and great meal. Another local haunt in the Turtle Bay area is Ted’s Bakery so find time to drool over pies and pastries. Grab one with a cup of coffee, if you’ve got time, to tide you over till dinner. If it’s a weekend, visit the Haleiwa farmers’ market (Sunday) for incredible locally handcrafted items; exotic fresh fruits, vegetables and fish and some lively entertainment. During the week, explore the art galleries, including Kahuku Art Gallery and Haleiwa Art Gallery.

Dress up for a fine dining experience at 21 Degrees North, which is located at Turtle Bay Resort. Steak, seafood, all organic produce and divine desserts will top a day of exploration. An excellent ambiance, five-course menu option and culinary intermingling of favorite foods and island cuisines are the essence of 21.

Turtle Bay is within reasonable proximity of Laie, Haleiwa and other North Shore towns with much to explore.
