Yellowstone, Yosemite, and other national parks are spectacular, no doubt about it. But in my opinion, they’re all ho-hum compared to Hawaii Volcanoes.  Here nothing less than the miracle of creation is the daily attraction.  In the 19th century, before tourism became Hawaii’s middle name and Hawaii home rentals brought visitors from around the globe, the islands’ singular attraction for world travelers wasn’t the beach, but the volcano. From the world over, curious spectators gathered on the rim of Kilauea’s Halemaumau crater to see one of the greatest wonders of the world. Nearly a century after it was named a national park (in 1916), Hawaii Volcanoes remains the state’s premier natural attraction.

Even so, the volcano has still caused its share of destruction. Since the current eruption of Kilauea began on January 3, 1983, lava has covered some 16,000 acres of lowland and rainforest, threatening rare hawks, honeycreeper birds, spiders, and bats, while destroying power and telephone lines and eliminating water service possibly forever. Some areas have been mantled repeatedly and are now buried underneath 80 feet of lava. At last count, the lava flow had destroyed nearly 200 homes and businesses, wiped out Kaimu Black Sand Beach (once Hawaii’s most photographed beach) and Queen’s Bath, obliterated entire towns and Hawaii home rentals, such as Kalapana, Royal Gardens, Kalapana Gardens, and Kapaahu Homesteads; and buried natural and historic landmarks (a 12th-c. heiau, the century-old Kalapana Mauna Kea Church, Wahaulu Visitor Center, and thousands of archaeological artifacts and sites). The cost of the destruction — so far — is estimated at $100 million. But how do you price the destruction of a 700-year-old temple or a 100-year-old church?

A Hawaii rental is your key to unlock a land of magic and mystery.  The original settlers of Hawaii, the mighty Polynesian adventurers, bested the best of the famed European navigators by nearly a millennium with their amazing voyage across the Pacific. How ironic that these gifted seafarers would eventually become victims, falling under the moist breath of mere latecomers who “discovered” their island by far less impressive means.

In the case of Captain Cook, the also-ran was also mistaken as a god. Arriving from the sea in a billowing sailing ship, wearing alien finery and presenting gifts of exotic, glimmering metals and silks, the locals believed him to be Lono, the god of fertility and abundance, and treated him with all due respect.  Who could have known the result of this hospitality? Everything seemed to happen so fast at the turn of the 19th century. Amidst civil war and unification, great explorers arrived on the scene, whaling developed as a major industry, and missionaries hoped onboard intent on civilizing the natives and sailors.

Within 50 years, the landscape of Hawaii had changed dramatically. The traditional rural lifestyle, kapu order, and land divisions were all replaced with a plantation lifestyle fueled with workers imported from around the globe, resulting in the most highly mixed cultural melting pot anywhere.

The late 1800s signaled the end of the Hawaiian monarchy, the takeover of a kingdom, the annexation of Hawaii by the United states of America. In short order, the world watched the growth of one of the planet’s most prized tourist industries with Hawaii rental properties multiplying exponentially, and in 1959 Hawaii was granted statehood, becoming the 50th State of the Union.  Hawaii has been recreated, as has all the world, in the past 200 years. Although we may long to hold on to the old ways, the romanticized version of the past, the simpler life we see represented in images of Old Hawaii, one thing is true — change is inevitable. Yet, the spirit and culture of the original kingdom of Hawaii is very, very strong.

Hawaiian vacation homes are your base camp for a great adventure!  The Volcano National Park is spectacular. First, we spent about a half hour doing some exploring on our own. We did a very quick hike on one of the trails leading from the balcony of the cafeteria. Within a few minutes we were going gaga over what we were seeing. We spent much of the time just looking at the Volcano Crater! It was amazing! Neither words nor pictures can prepare you for how large and how breathtaking the area is. We took turns with the video camera because the zoom lens was so great that it was like having binoculars. It was great to look at an area of the volcano “floor” using the camera, and then zooming so that what appeared to be a dot became a hiker. The weather was perfect for sightseeing, so we could see for miles! I am embarrassed to admit that I personally didn’t spend too much time inside the Jagger Museum. Instead, I used the time to resume my gazing at the Volcano crater. No words can really describe how unique the crater is. At this point, I could see cars driving along the perimeter road (appropriately called Crater Rim Drive), which really gave me a perspective on how small the cars were and how huge the crater was.  We also stopped at the Sulphur Banks. Personally, I have lived in the country where I already had the pleasure of the rotten egg smells. But maybe that horrendous smell is new for some. It did however hammer home how diverse the environment around the volcano is.

A very interesting section of the Park was Thurston Lava Tube. First, the tour driver explained how a lava tube was created. Before his explanation I was clueless. Then he dropped us off for a half hour of exploration. First we walked down the stairs and quickly the Tube “swallowed us”. Without the added lights, the tunnel would have been very dark. It was pretty high in most places, but there were areas where almost all visitors had to bend to avoid being hit on the head. Obviously no active lava was flowing at the time, so it was like investigating an abandoned mineshaft. The irregular tunnel has rich dark walls. We also stopped so we could actually walk on various terrains. There were lava rock areas that looked like a very bad road-paving job. We also walked on lava areas where the lava consisted of lots of sharp pointed lava rocks that could slash you if you fell. Then there were the steam areas, especially in Steaming Bluffs. It is hard to describe walking along a path and being able to see (and feel) steam coming up through the ground, or seeing areas that looked like campfires! This tour was during the day - seeing the active lava flow at night was a sight never to be forgotten!   Hawaiian vacation homes open the door to the most spectacular adventure imaginable!

Have you ever seen an erupting volcano up close?  Hawaii Volcanoes has the only rainforest in the U.S. National Park system — and it’s the only park that’s home to an active volcano. Most people drive through the park from their rental property in Hawaii since the park has 50 miles of good roads, some of them often covered by lava flows; and then call it a day. But it takes at least 3 days to explore the whole park, including such oddities as Halemaumau Crater, a still-fuming pit of steam and sulfur; the intestinal-looking Thurston Lava Tube; Devastation Trail, a short hike through a desolated area destroyed by lava; and, finally, the end of Chain of Craters Road, where lava regularly spills across the man-made two-lane blacktop to create its own red-hot freeway to the sea. In addition to some of the world’s weirdest landscapes, the park has hiking trails, rainforests, campgrounds, a historic old hotel on the crater’s rim, and that spectacular, still-erupting volcano.

A Volcano-Visiting Tip — Thanks to its higher elevation and windward (rainier) location, this neck of the woods is always colder than it is at the beach. If your rental property in Hawaii is on the Kona side of the island in summer, expect it to be at least 10° to 20° cooler at the volcano; bring a sweater or light jacket. In the winter months, expect temperatures to be in the 40s or 50s (single digits to midteens Celsius), and dress accordingly. Always have rain gear on hand, especially in winter.

Notes on the Erupting Volcano — Volcanologists refer to Hawaii’s volcanic eruptions as “quiet” eruptions because gases escape slowly instead of building up and exploding violently all at once. Hawaii’s eruptions produce slow-moving, oozing lava that provides excellent, safe viewing most of the time.
